Taking Photographs in the Snow
Snow is incredibly picturesque, and will open up a whole new world of opportunities for photographers. It can make for some stunning images, transforming landscapes which are usually familiar into a winter wonderland that will look beautiful on camera. Scenes which appear commonplace or everyday will be shown in a whole new light and it will definitely be worth going out for a walk and taking your camera with you to scout out the best locations for photography in the snow.
It can be difficult to take photographs during snowy weather from a technical point-of-view. Exposure will be tricky and you might need to use compensation so that your images won’t be over-exposed. If you’re shooting something which is a little closer to hand you may want to consider using the flash to lessen the contrast. You can also use the snowflakes themselves as part of the image rather than trying to work against them. Play around with the shutter speed to capture the snowflakes differently – a slow shutter speed will show streaks of snow which can be used to great artistic effect. You can always edit the images afterwards if you’d like to make amendments and have the correct photo editing software to hand.
